NEC to honour 12 sportspersons

ITANAGAR, May 28: The NEC Chairman’s Sports Awards would be conferred to 12 outstanding sportspersons from the North Eastern Region, who won Gold, Silver or Bronze medals in the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games & National Games in the year 2010-11.

The awards carry cash prizes of Rs.10 Lakh, Rs.5 Lakh and Rs.3 Lakh for Gold, Silver and Bronze medalist in Commonwealth and Asian Games respectively and Rs.3 Lakh, Rs.2 Lakh and Rs.1 Lakh for Gold, Silver and Bronze medal winners respectively for National Games. The cash awards for Olympic Games are Rs.40 Lakh, Rs.20 Lakh and Rs.10 Lakh for Gold, Silver and Bronze medal winners respectively.

Earlier in the month, the North East Council (NEC) announced cash reward for sportspersons from the region who get medals in the Olympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and National Games. Minister of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and Chairman of North East Council, Bijoy Krishna Handique approved the cash awards.

The awardees include, Somdev Kishore Dev Barman (Tripura), Jayanta Talikdar (Assam), M. Suranjoy Singh, Y. Renubala, L. Bombayala Devi, NG Sonia, Kh. Bheigyabati, A. Sandhyarani, L. Monica, W. Sandhyarani, M. Bimoljit, and M.C Mary Kom, all from Manipur.

Somdev Kishore Dev Barman got the highest reward of Rs. 33 Lakh for his outstanding performance in Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. He won a Gold in Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi, two Gold and a Bronze medals in Asian Games held in China.

Pugilist Suronjoy will get Rs. 13 lakh for his Gold in Commonwelath and Silver in Asian Games.

Archer Jayanta Talukdar would be given Rs 9 Lakh for winning three bronze two in Commonwealth Games and one in Asian Games. Manipuri Archer L.Bombayala Devi will receive Rs 10 lakh for his gold medal winning performance in Commonwealth Games.

Weightlifter NG Sonia of Manipur will be given Rs 5 Lakh for her Silver medal in  commonwealth Games.

Kh.Bheigyabati, A.Sandhyarani, L.Monica, W.Sandhyarani, M.Bimoljit, and M.C Mary Kom will get Rs.3 Lakh each.

The award would be conferred during the 60th NEC Plenary Meeting to be held at New Delhi on June 16 and 17, 2011, said Bijoy Krishna Handique, Minister of DoNER at New Delhi yesterday, according to a release issued by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.

“It is heartening to learn that out of the 12 awardees this year, 10 are from Manipur. Therefore, it is the Government to recognize their accomplishments in the sports arena in a befitting manner in the presence of all Chief Ministers and Governors of all the NE States,”  Handique said. He further said that  he was proud to be a part of this process and occasion, the release added.

 

‘Make the roads free from stray animals’

ITANAGAR, May 28: While reminding the District administration about its earlier order on domestic stray animals, which directed the owners to keep their animals in captive, the Capital Youth Organization (CYO) today demanded the authority to swing into action to free roads from such stray animals.

While lamenting that the order remained on paper only, CYO said, “free roaming of domestic animals has caused road accidents on several occasions besides creating public nuisance”.

It also demanded the city police to impose massive traffic and security restrictions for all categories of vehicles and unruly drivers should be penalized. It appealed to the police to regularly conduct awareness campaign on traffic rules.

 

GSU against arrest in Aalo

ITANAGAR, May 28: The Galo Students Union (GSU) has condemned the arrest of its legal advisor Kenbom Bagra. In an emergency meeting of central executive of GSU after the arrest of its advisor, the Union has unanimously decided to fight legally and start a mass movement against the unwarranted arrest unless he is unconditionally released.

The arrest of Bagra without any valid reason is unbecoming and uncalled for, the Union said while adding that if such act is repeated then there will be complete anarchy in entire Galo inhabited area.

The act of Deputy Commissioner West Siang, Amjad Tak, has once again provoked the sentiments of the people, it said while demanding immediate transfer of Deputy Commissioner West Siang, from the district. The GSU will not tolerate any attempts by Govt. to suppress the democratic voice of aggrieved people, it said.

 

PR leaders demand transfer of civil servants

ITANAGAR, May 28: Tali Anchal Chairperson Rodak Tadik, in a release, said that all the 16 ASMs and GPMs of Tali Block in a meeting held recently have unanimously resolved to demand the competent authority to transfer those civil servants who have already completed 3 years of service in Tali Block.

While urging the Tali MLA to take a quick action against those civil servants, the ASM in its release said that the decision was taken by the panchayat leaders against those officers in view of their ‘non-cooperation, misuse of power and function.’

 

East Siang DCC flays USPA

ITANAGAR, May 28: East Siang District Congress Committee (DCC) vehemently criticized the United Siang Progressive Alliance (USPA) for its statement questioning the shifting of Tako Dabi from home ministry to fishery and induction of Pema Khandu in Jarbom Gamlin-led ministry.  

Terming the USPA statement as concocted, cooked and deliberate attempt to mislead the civil societies, DCC said that the Alliance should not dictate the Government in its policy and programme.  

 The DCC urged the USPA not to make unnecessary political issue out of no issue and added that will of the people of East Siang should not be decided by few individual in the name of organization and people.

The DCC further said that questioning the induction of Pema Khandu in the ministry is unfortunate, irresponsible and it is against spirit of society after the tragic death of former CM.  USPA statement not only hurt the people of Kameng area, grief stricken family, it also hurt the people of East Siang, the  DDC said and urged the Alliance to make unconditional apology to the people of respective district.

DCC also appealed all the citizens and organizations not to blame the Govt and refrain from baseless allegations in the name of region and people.

 

Early start of works under SPA demanded

ITANAGAR, May 28: All East Kameng Students’ Union (AEKSU) urged the various govt. departments in East Kameng district to start execution of works under SPA as per guidelines immediately.

Though it is a time-bound scheme to be completed in the month of September 2011, no work has been started yet in the district, AEKSU said in a release. It urged the deputy commissioner and legislators of the district to look into the matter so that schemes meant for the benefit of people are properly executed and implemented.

The students union also urged the executing agencies, contractors of Rajiv Gandhi Gramya Vityutikaran Yujna (RGGVY) in the district to speed up their work so that electrification works are completed before March, 2012, the targeted period. According to AEKSU, many projects, even pole erection works are yet to be done in many places in the district.

 

Drawing competition held

NAHARLAGUN, May 28: Naharlagun based Reliance Life Insurance (RLI) organized a junior level drawing and painting competition here at Jubilee English School Lekhi village today.

Around sixty eight students participated in the competition in which Taw Ane, Techi Jill and Tok Baby bagged the first, second and third prize, while Licha Yani, Likha Tado, Techi Ani and Teli Takam got the consolation prize.

Speaking as chief guest, RLI branch manager Ponung Pada asked the participants to actively participate in such co-curricular activities besides studying. The RLI will conduct such activities in the capital complex very soon, she informed.

JES principal Gary Seiboi Kipgen thanked RLI for conducting the events. “Such competition gives the students a platform to show their talent and will keep them competitive”, he said.

BAF conference held

ITANAGAR, May 28: Bogum Ao Foundation (BAF), Itanagar, in its general body conference today, which was attended by former minister Lijum Ronya, has unanimously selected Tony Koyu as the new president and Karpak Sora as general secretary.

 

District NCP leaders resign

ITANAGAR, May 28: West Siang district NCP leaders including its president, vice president and general secretaries have resigned from primary membership of the district NCP unit.

While requesting the state NCP president to accept their resignations,  the NCP leaders including district NCP president and leaders of NCP blocks and sub-blocks in its joint  letter to state NCP president said ‘since we have completed the tenure as district unit and carried out our entrusted and assigned duties we hereby dissolved the NCP district unit as well as resigned from primary membership and portfolios of the party purely on personal ground for healthy and democratic party organization in future.’

 

ATDSU resents poor performance

ITANAGAR, May 28: Expressing dismay over the poor performance of BRTF and BSNL authorities in Tawang and  West Kameng districts,  All Tawang District Students Union (ATDSU)  urged both BRTF and BSNL to come up to the expectation  of people immediately. While discussing the performance of both the organizations, the union said  that  the condition of  Bhalukpong to Tawang road is getting worse day by day while  BSNL network  is creating trouble instead of providing improved service. The union further  appealed the Central Govt to  monitor the working of the BRTF. We want result, not assurance, it added.

 

Ziro-Ita Sumo, bus service suspended on Jun 4  

ITANAGAR, May 28: All Lower Subansiri Maxi-Cab Association has decided to stop Tata Sumo and Bus services from Ziro to Itanagar and vice versa for a day on June 4 next in view of the ensuing annual conference of the association.

It is regretted that the date was wrongly published as June 14 in May 28 issue.

 

Swearing in of Parl Secretaries

ITANAGAR: The swearing-in ceremony of the Parliamentary Secretaries to the government of Arunachal Pradesh will be held on Monday, 30 May  at 1000 hrs at the State Banquet Hall.  Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin will administer the oath of office and secrecy to the new team.  

 

3 Arunachalees selected for 11th Asian Karate C’ship

ITANAGAR: Three Karatekas from Arunachal Pradesh have been selected to represent the country at 11th Asian Karate Championship scheduled to the held in China during June/July, 2011.

Likha Lej, Tage Saa and Rei Yadi were selected in a selection trial conducted at Tal Kotora Indoor Stadium, New Delhi by All India Karate Do Federation today, Bulang Marik, coach cum manager of the team, told The Arunachal Times over telephone from New Delhi this evening. Sinne Mikhu, however, missed the China event as he lost his bout against his opponent from Haryana in the semifinal, Marik, also secretary of Arunachal Karate Do Association, (AKA) informed.

 

Committee urges verification

ITANAGAR: Questioning the entry of large number of private financial institutions in the state capital, All India Quami Ekta Committee (AIQEC) has urged the state Govt to verify the authenticity of such financial institutions.

Saying that some private financial institutions are collecting crores of rupees from public, the Committee said the innocent people of the state may be deceived in future if their credentials are not properly checked.
